So today at "la comida" when asking which postre I wanted, my host mom took bananas out of the frigorifico and explained that even though black, they were still white on the inside. I told her "hey! That's what my mom does when we make banana bread!" After explaining what on earth that was, she promptly asked the ingredients to see if she had them. She told me that we could make it this afternoon and I got on facebook to ask my mom for the recipe. When I'd translated it, I showed it to my host mom, who gave me permission for free reign of the kitchen to make it later- aaand we did. To be honest, I had forgotten when I came out of my room to get a mid-day snack. She immediately nabbed me. Thinking that I was looking to begin, she had me get the recipe and began grabbing all the ingredients out. I panicked when I realized a few things. First of all, they don't have measuring utensils!!! (what????) She pulled out a coffee cup, and when I asked for a measurer, she set a blender cup thing on the table with only 1, 2, and 3 cups on it... "ok I thought, this will be an adventure..." She didn't even have table or teaspoons! She just handed me a normal spoon (which is a tablespoon anyways, but still) and a bowl, whisk, and pan- and told me to go at it. I've had other "anne moments" with banana bread making before (which is a whole other story completely) so I quickly asked my mom who was thankfully on facebook- if the recipe made 1 or 2 bread pans. It was a good thing I asked cause I needed a big pan and that could've been messy..... like before. Also- my host mom didn't have baking soda- Only baking powder, and she was convinced that they were the same thing. I asked my mom via fb and she-googling from home- said that I was in a between a bit of a tight spot... I found a Spanish cite convincing my host mom that they were indeed not the same thing and we(both moms and myself) finally decided to just use a bunch of the powder... After we finished, we plopped it into the oven in a pan that I sure hope works! I'm told this oven is much faster than normal ones and also that banana bread sometimes won't cook all the way through... I feel the need to be impressive right now with my host mom so excited and this being the first time I've baked here! Although, with no real idea of how much of anything I put in, not having baking soda, a cake pan that I can't judge the thickness of, and a Spanish oven, I think it's gonna be a miracle if this turns out. (Which my host mom is definitely NOT worried about in the least) I'm a little less sure... Guess we'll see how it turns out! Who ever thought I'd bake banana bread in Spain with my mom at home helping me over the internet and my host mom helping me in real life! Definitely an interesting experience! It's been in the oven now for almost the whole time. It's looking good so far! I'll tell you how it turns out! I'm ready to witness a miracle to be able to share with all of you! .... or just a funny story about the faces they make when they eat it tonight... either way
